Bakery on Main

It all started in the small bakery of a natural foods market on Main Street in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Founder Michael Smulders listened to his Celiac customers complain about the taste of many of the gluten free options available to them. He thought that no one should have to suffer because of a food allergy or other special dietary need, and made it his mission to create products that were good for them but taste like they aren’t. Late in 2003, after tasting a granola recipe one of the bakers was working on, Smulders said, “these gluten free people need granola!” He walked through the store and gathered ingredients and baked the first batch that day. It took almost 2 years to find gluten free sources of all the ingredients and find a place where we could make the product without risk of cross-contamination. Three years and two bakeries later, their gluten free granola is made in a 34,000 square foot manufacturing facility with state of the art quality controls and in-house gluten testing on every batch. Located just a few miles down the road from the original bakery, the plant maintains the small bakery quality by continuing to bake in small batches.

Vita Coco

Every brand has a nutty story, this is ours… One evening in a Manhattan bar in February 2003, childhood friends, Ira Liran and Michael Kirban, were speaking with two young women they had just met from Brazil. When asked what they missed most about their country, one of the girls, without hesitation, answered “agua de coco.” Coconut water, she explained, is the most nutritious and delicious drink in the world. Two months later in Brazil, visiting one of the Brazilian women who would eventually become his wife, Liran started researching the prospect of branding coconut water for the American market. He realized her enthusiasm for the beverage was not exaggerated – Brazilians just cannot get enough coconut water. After spending several months working with coconut plantations and producers, making connections, and learning the politics of production in Brazil, Vita Coco was born. Meanwhile, Kirban started the initial market research in New York. Meeting with distributors and beverage insiders, he quickly realized the tremendous consumer interest in “functional beverages.” He spoke with several distributors who then introduced Kirban to some of their key accounts. The response was fantastic. In summer 2004, the two successfully brought Vita Coco to market in a handful of stores along the East Coast. Since that fateful night on the Lower East Side in 2003, Vita Coco has not only carved a new market in the non-carbonated beverage business and redefined the alternative sports beverage category, it has also become one of the fastest growing lifestyle beverages in North America. Vita Coco’s popularity only continues to increase. Now available in over 17,000 retail stores nationally, Vita Coco is one of the hottest beverage brands in the world, with a cult-like brand loyalty.

Badger Balm

Badger is a family run, family friendly business located on the banks of the Ashuelot River in rural Gilsum, New Hampshire, USA. Bill, Katie and daughters Mia, Emily and Rebecca started the business back in 1995, in the kitchen of their home. Bill Whyte was a carpenter by trade and an herbalist by avocation. Bill whipped up a batch of the original Healing Balm in his kitchen using Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Beeswax, Castor Oil, Aloe Vera and Essential Oil of Sweet Birch—a traditional New England herbal remedy. The result was astounding: a simple, all-natural, soothing and healing balm that really worked! And a company was born. A team of about 40 friendly badgers formulates, manufactures, and ships almost all of the products from our facility, known as The Badger Mines. Badger works hard to create a healthy business with ethical and charitable principles. Call and ask any employee. You’ll hear about our free organic lunches, green initiatives in every department and our charitable giving practices—not to mention our lunchtime full-contact badminton games! Our mission: To create fabulously pure and effective products of the highest natural quality, based on simplicity and thoughtful preparation, with the intention to soothe and heal. To run a business that is fun, fair and profitable; where money is fuel, not a goal; and where our vision for a healthier world finds expression through the way we work and through the way we treat each other and the people we serve. Check out our quality embrocation options available at many health food stores or directly from our website.

The Core Diet

The Core Diet for Athletes was developed 10 years ago by QT2 Systems coach and founder Jesse Kropelnicki. The Core Diet was designed to help athletes live, train, and compete at their optimal level. Through proper nutrition that includes nutrient rich foods consumed at the right time, the Core Diet will have you performing and living at your very best. You really won't believe how good you feel! The Core Diet is focused around those foods which are the the most nutrient dense, and critical for athletes to focus on to improve performance, improve health, and reach, or maintain body composition. The Core foods, lean meats, fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, lean dairy, and legumes, are the backbone to the program. Other less nutrient dense foods serve a specific purpose and are timed to provide athletes a benefit to their training, and decrease the storage of unwanted body fat. At the Core Diet we believe it is not just important to know what to eat, but to know why you are eating it. Our growing community of athletes is a fun, energetic group, all looking to improve their nutrition, and make progress! Our registered dietitians will give you the tools you need to make that progress. Whether it be to maintain an already healthy weight, lose weight, or fuel training and racing, the Core Diet can provide you with a plan that suits your individual needs.

Larabar

It started out as just a hike, no different than countless others I've taken into the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Little did I know I was about to come up with a mountain of an idea: Combine wholesome ingredients such as fruits and nuts to create a food product that's tasty, healthy and convenient. In that instant, in May 2000, LÄRABAR was born. After scouring the aisles of grocery stores and noting popular flavors of ice cream and cookies, I delved into my own product development. Natural foods, I believed, should be fun and enjoyable as well as good for you. With friends and family serving as focus groups, I tinkered with recipes until a consensus on yummi-ness was reached. The next step was to launch a company to market what would initially be five delicious LÄRABAR flavors: Cherry Pie, Apple Pie, Cashew Cookie, Banana Cookie, and Chocolate Coconut Chew. I also assembled a sophisticated manufacturing arm...what amounted to be a Cuisinart and a rolling pin. The first batch of bars I produced for retail had to be sealed by hand - all 500 of them! Thank goodness we have machines for that job today. After all, we're producing millions of LÄRABAR's every year! They are a wholesome indulgence you can feel good about eating. And "feeling good" is what it's all about. Believe it or not, I used to be a junk food junkie - until I discovered how natural foods enlivened my mind, body and spirit. A passion for healthy living soon followed, and continues to be a driving force behind everything I do professionally and personally. I really appreciate the opportunity I have to make a positive difference in the world we live in. Health is indeed your greatest wealth. Lara, Founder

Revolution Wheelworks

We are cyclists. We race bikes, commute by bike, and ride our bikes just for the fun of it.  We salivate over the latest innovations in bike technology, many of which have helped revolutionize our sport by offering riders of all abilities access to lightweight, aerodynamic, and affordable frames and components. However, when it comes to bike wheels the opposite is true. When shopping for racing wheels, we were forced to compromise on weight, aerodynamics, or affordability. The wheels we wanted were either priced out of our range or didn’t exist altogether. Many name brand, factory manufactured wheels are designed more for style than for function: aero-wheels that are heavy, wheels with fan-like spokes that are anything but aerodynamic, and wheels using proprietary parts that most bike shops don’t keep in stock. We set out to make wheels that we wanted to ride. Wheels with the proper balance of weight, aerodynamics, and durability. Wheels built by hand using advanced composite materials. Wheels that are fast enough for race day, but tough enough for group rides. Wheels that can be serviced at any bike shop. Wheels that won’t break the bank. It’s in this spirit that Revolution Wheelworks was born. Come join the Revolution.
